Restoring the atmosphere – Greenhouse gas removal
public talk
We heard about the revolutionary approaches being taken from our leading expert, and looked at the challenges that greenhouse gas removal brings with it.
Professor Richard Templer FRSC - Director of Innovation, Grantham Institute, Imperial College London
Before the industrial revolution the earth’s atmosphere contained 280 parts per million of CO2 and our climate was both benign and stable. Burning fossil fuels has raised CO2 levels to 420 parts per million, trapping more heat in the atmosphere and bringing in its wake extreme weather and dangerous warming. The priority must be to stop emitting greenhouse gases, but we have prevaricated for so long that additionally we now need to find viable, safe methods of removing CO2 from the atmosphere permanently.
The Grantham Institute:
The Grantham Institute sits at the heart of Imperial College London's work on climate change and the environment.It drives forward discovery, converts innovations into applications, trains future leaders and communicates academic knowledge to businesses, industry and policymakers to help shape their decisions.
Professor Templer leads the Grantham Institute’s innovation activities:
He has led the founding of the centre for climate change innovation, a collaboration with the Royal Institution of Great Britain and housed in their historic building. In his work as a member of the London Sustainable Development Commission he has advised and supported the GLA in the development of London as a global hub for cleantech innovation.
