Before the industrial revolution the earth’s atmosphere contained 280 parts per million of CO2 and our climate was both benign and stable. Burning fossil fuels has raised CO2 levels to 420 parts per million, trapping more heat in the atmosphere and bringing in its wake extreme weather and dangerous warming. The priority must be to stop emitting greenhouse gases, but we have prevaricated for so long that additionally we now need to find viable, safe methods of removing CO2 from the atmosphere permanently.
